The following courses last for 30 weeks across three terms.. A short explanation is provided to give guidance on the level of competence required in order be able to cope with the demands of each course.
Holy Trinity CE Primary School
Sunday 12 noon - 4pm
For Adult students
Adult 1st year-Beginners
Suitable for adults who have no prior knowledge of the language and are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese.
Adult 2nd year-Lower Intermediate Level
For adults who have either completed a 1st year course or have at least 80 hours of learning experience.
By the end of these two stages, students should have covered enough ground to be able to cope with many everyday needs in a Chinese-speaking environment. After completing the 2nd year, you can either seek externally validated qualifications, or move to a conversation course.
For Younger Students
Nursery Class
For children aged 3 -5 years
Objective:To give young children a taste of the Chinese Language. Through playing and learning the children will get a basic grasp of conversation and simple rhymes.
Foundation Level -A
For children aged 5 - 6 years, both those progressing from the nursery class or those who are not previously familiar to the Chinese language.
Objective:To help your child continue to develop his/her language skills and experience of Chinese culture. Students will learn basic vocabulary, phrases and dialogue with characters and situations relevant to their lives.
Foundation Level -B
For children aged 7-8 years, both those progressing from the Level A and those who are not previously familiar to the Chinese language.
Objective:Students will learn basic vocabulary, phrases and dialogue with characters and situations relevant to their lives. Students will also be introduced to Chinese writing through the different strokes that are the building blocks of the characters.
Introductory Level-A
For children progressing from the Foundation class and those who are not previously familiar to the Chinese language from age 8 and above.
Objective:To enable your child to expand their knowledge of frequently used Chinese characters, words and basic sentences. They will practice all the skills - listening, speaking and reading, as well as learning to write about 40 characters.
Introductory Level- B
For children progressing from the Introductory Level A class or by tutor assessment. This course is suitable for students in Upper Primary or Lower Secondary School.
Objective:To enable your child to build on skills and vocabulary learned in Introductory Level A. By the end of Level B they should be able to write short sentences and a simple letter, as well as learning to write a total of 84 characters and 280 words and phrases
Elementary Level -A
For students progressing from the Introductory Level class or by tutor assessment. It is ideally suited to students of around 10 to 11 years old.
Objective:To enable your child to build on skills and vocabulary learned in introductory level. This level introduces more than 220 words and phrases and there are 70 characters to be learnt to write.
Elementary Level-B
For students progressing from the Elementary Level B class or by tutor assessment. It is ideally suited to students of around 12 to 13 years old.
Objective:By the end of course, the students should be able to write 130 characters, short paragraphs, simple letters and keep a diary.
Intermediate Level- A
Please note:This is the third level of the course and is designed for students who have completed Introductory and Elementary Level. This level is ideally suited for students around 13 to 14 years old in years 9 or 10 of High School. All students must be assessed by a tutor and a placement test is required.
Intermediate Level-B
This is the third level of the course and is designed for students who have completed Intermediate Level- A. This level is ideally suited for students around 14 to 15 years old in years 10 or 11 of High School.
Objective:By the end of course, students are ready to embark on a GCSE revision course, or continue for advance level.
Advance Level -A
This is the third level of the course and is designed for students who have completed Intermediate Level- B. All students must be assessed by a tutor and a placement test is required.
Objective:By the end of course, students are ready to embark on a GCSE revision course, or continue for advance level.
The following courses are one term short courses, a short explanation about the course is provided.
Chinese Express
This is a 3 hours lesson for 10 sessions, it is a course for beginners who would like to learn the Mandarin Chinese at a fast pace. At the end of course, you would be able to join Adult year 2 course.
Conversation Tea House
This is for those who speak fluent Chinese and would like to meet and network with others by reading and discussing articles from Chinese newspapers, essays, etc.
This course combines thought provoking conversations, topics with a communicative approach; it emphasizes the spoken language by encouraging serious dialogue among students. Task-based activities encourage genuine, active communication and creates a creative meaning-center atmosphere.
GCSE Revision
The course is scheduled on autumn term 2008 focusing on the different GCSE papers where the students will be given the opportunity to revise and practice the different skills in preparation for the exam in June. Classes will be small.
Tutorial Service
This service is available for students who need help and additional support during the course; e.g., more guidance in completing the coursework or help after missing lessons. You can book a block of 4 tutorial sessions each lasting a half hour with your tutor. Please contact office or at school desk for the cost and must be booked in advance. Time and day to be arranged with your teacher.
