Chinese New Year performanace -7th February 2010

Dear Parents and students

Thank you to everyone who attended the AGM on earlier in January. I have minutes of the AGM available to anyone who would like to see them. If you do, please contact Rose, the school secretary on secretary@huahsia-chinese.org.uk and Rose will send you a copy.

As a run up to the Chinese New Year, we had a successful and interesting True Heart Theatre performance on Sunday 31 January 2010. This was well attended and everyone really enjoyed themselves - a big thank you to True Heart Theatre which is funded by Trust for London and Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Remember Hua Hsia Chinese School will celebrate the Chinese New Year on 7^th February 2010 with a performance from our students. This is at 3pm in the assembly hall and will be a 40 minute show. All students will receive a hong bao (red envelope) with a chocolate gold coin. Chinese sweets and tea will be on offer to the parents. I welcome parents and/or students to bring a celebratory plate of snacks to share with Hua Hsia Chinese School community. I do also hope that all the Hua Hsia Chinese School students will wear Chinese clothes on this special day celebrating Spring!

Dear Parents and Students, please note that the Museum of London: Docklands is celebrating the Year of the Tiger on 6, 13, 14, 21 February 2010. You can join them for a series of events throughout February to celebrate the Year of the Tiger and explore their galleries to discover how London's Chinese community developed in the East End and the historical importance of trade between London and China. There is FREE adult entry on 13, 14, 21 February and kids go free all year round! There are so many interesting things to do. We are currently working on the school calendar for 2010 - 2011 academic year. The school calendar generally follows that of the local schools of London Borough of Barnet, Camden and Westminster. A draft academic year 2010/11 will be announced shortly.

I have been contacted by MeiMei writing on the behalf of Music for Change. Music for Change is an Arts Council funded charitable art organisation. We are making an educational documentary 'Real Lives Shanghai' for UK schools to use. We are looking for two voice over artists aged 10 - 12, who speak English with an authentic Chinese accent (preferably haven't lived here for long). Welcome back -Spring 2010

Welcome back after a VERY snowy festive season. As you all know, the weather has brought chaos and travel difficulties to many areas. I do hope you are not too affected by this weather. I have decided to keep the first day of school open on Sunday 10 January so lessons will continue as normal.

As most of you know, I am the sole distributor for the IQ Chinese e-learning products in the UK. I am excited to announce we have launched our new website www.iqhinese.co.uk. It is linked with the Hua Hsia Chinese School website. It is such an interesting and progressive way of learning Chinese. There is a short explanatory DVD showing on the "After School Club" page. Please go on and have a look. Any feedback is most welcome.

And lastly dear parents please don't forget our AGM to be held on 17 January 2010, 2.30pm in the Assembly Hall - I look forward to seeing you there!

End of summer-Chinese Festival 2009

You are cordially invited to HUA HSIA's Chinese Festival to mark our summer end of term. The Festival is scheduled to take place on Sunday 12 July 2009 from 13:30hrs to 16:00hrs at the Haverstock Hill School, London NW3.

The Festival programme comprises cultural workshops (limited to 30 places per workshop) with a series of performances from Step Out Arts-Ms Jih- Wen Yeh and Kung Fu Master Mr Heng Sheng Wang.

BABYLON Exhibition by the British Museum

Communities Team invites our students , parents and tutors to a free special view of the spectacular exhibition "Babylon". This fascinating exhibition will explore both the archaeology of Babylon (605-562BC) and its height of power during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II and the rich legacy in modern art and thought inspired by the city.

I also want to combine this trip with a visit to the Shanghai exhibition. Treasures from Shanghai Museum. Shanghai Museum is one of the leading museums in China and holds the finest collection of ancient Chinese bronzes and bronzes.

Residential and/or Daily Chinese Culture Summer Workshops 2009

This workshop gives you an opportunity to learn and experience: Traditional Chinese Arts & Crafts, Martial Arts (Chinese Kung Fu), Traditional Chinese Dance, Mandarin and other skills. There are going to be professional Chinese Teachers from R.O.C (Taiwan).

Places are limited, so sign up as soon as possible. Courses run from 16th - 21st August (6 days & 5 nights for residential.) The rate is £90 per week (excluding boarding). It costs £150 per week (Including boarding and three meals.) Students must be age 10+. The deadline will be the 30th of April. Please contact school office for application form.

Cultural Olympics in London 2012

2 hour taster workshop - a mixture of drama activities with focus on Chinese New Year

The school has been approached by Yellow Earth Theatre to join the 2012 Olympics with partnerships with Beijing students. I have announced this news in autumn 2008 and few parents contact me showing interests. Yellow Earth Theatre is offering an exciting opportunity to experience the drama activates with focus on Chinese New Year. There will be a short 5 minute presentation to parents of work at the end. This taster workshop will be led by one of their team of experience facilitators.

Yellow Earth is planning in partnership with the Central School of Speech and Drama to launch the first British East Asian Youth Theatre for ages 8-18 in autumn 2009. This will be followed by A play in 2 days held at Central School of Speech and Drama, Swiss Cottage, London NW3. 6-7^th April 2009.

Admission charge is £5.00 per students.

You need to pre-book the place with the school.

If there are less 10 students showing interest, I am afraid the taster workshop won't run and those who paid will get a refund. The closing date is 15^th February.

The Prime Minister's Global Fellowship - Application deadline 18 February 2009‏

The Prime Minister's Global Fellowship gives talented 18-19 year olds the chance to experience first-hand some of the major new countries of the globaleconomy - Brazil, China and India by taking them through a series of inter-cultural experiences that highlight issues of language and culture, education and economic growth and development. We are looking for applications from enthusiastic school and college leavers who are enterprising self starters, keen to share in conversations about how the world is changing, and the part they can play in that change.

Those who are 18 or 19 on the 1st July 2009, are a school or college leaver,member of a recognised youth organisation, or enrolled in an apprenticeship or other work-based learning scheme, can apply online by 18 February 2009 at www.global-fellowship.org.

Chinese New Year (THE YEAR OF THE OX)

Chinese New Year is a very special and important celebration time in the Chinese culture. On the New Year's Eve families usually get together to have a special meal, children receive a red envelope; friends and families say only lucky words to each other.

I have arranged a Chinese New Year dinner party on 8th February 09. Please note below the details. I have book the VIP room which can only take 40 seats with Karaoke, so we can have entrainment after dinner. For those who love to sing, we are looking forward to hearing from you.

Tickets need to be purchased in advance at the school desk from Jasmine or write a cheque to the school address. Do make sure you purchase your tickets no later than 1st February 2009.

It is exciting to moving back to Holy Trinity School, the new build Nursery classroom has an en-suite toilet and a private playground. A new classroom for Advance class is above the Nursery. All classrooms are allocated based on the age of students and size of class.

The school desk and Parents waiting room will be at the Assembly Hall. Moon Festival Celebration on Sunday 28 September.

Our tradition of celebrating this with moon cakes and Chinese tea will take place.

Many of you always wish to place orders for moon cakes, please make sure you do so in advance with Jasmine who will take orders with payment. Please order on or before 21st September. The order will be delivered to school on 28 September.

We are now Members of ContinYou & Specialist Schools & Academies Trust

These memberships will enhance training and be great facilitators for our school. Our teachers are all highly qualified and experienced in the teaching of Mandarin. They are required to regularly update their skills by attending both internal and external training events. This has been an eventful year and I would like to thank all of you for your contributions hard work and ever growing support to the school.

It is the dedication of parents and the teaching of our brilliant staff makes us so successful in achieving high standard of heritage language. I am sure if you continue to support and our students continue to progress in the same way this will be a supplementary school that can reach great heights.

We would like to remind you even though the term is ending on 13 June there are still plenty of events to come during summer holidays and forthcoming events in the new academic year.

It has been a successful year and many of you have enrolled for the summer camp for the full 4 days. As many of you already are aware that the British Museum has offered the students and parents of our school the opportunity to spend a sleepover. This is another unique opportunity to do something different and exciting with your children during summer holidays. Please apply as soon as possible, don't miss out on this "Night at the Museum"

Barnet Summer Uni 2008
28 July -15 August

We are in partnership with Barnet Council to run some of our workshops and classes FREE of charge as a pioneering new incentive for children to enrol on new and varied programmes during summer. Please see the website for all the courses including our courses.

Our valuable teacher Miss Hsiu Nien Wei is leaving at the end of this year 07-08 and the foundation B new teacher will be Miss Tsai-Wei Chen. We wish Miss Wei all the best on her study. Miss Chen is looking forward working with our wonderful students and parents.
Also, it's our teacher Jenny's birthday party. Mrs Sing has working with Hua Hsia since we start the school. We wish her happy birthday and forever young. This will also be a ceremony to give all the children prizes and certificates for their achievements. The outstanding achievement of FULL YEAR ATTENDANCE will be given to Berlinda Middleton. It is a pleasure to have such a student as part of our school and such supporting parents.
