Dear Parents, thank you for your continued support of Hua Hsia Chinese School. There will be good progress ahead for both the school and the students' efforts. Like any school, it is important to maintain standards. Hua Hsia Chinese School has a high standard of tuition and in order to maintain these high standards we do like to introduce new students and fresh ideas. **We are very pleased with the tuition provided by the Hua Hsia Chinese School. Our daughter has been able to achieve Grade A* in the 2010 GCSE Examinations. She started almost 4 years ago, at the age of 12 years, with absolutely no knowledge of the language and initially attended the Sunday junior classes with much younger pupils. From October 2009 we decided to push her towards obtaining the GCSE and the Chinese School were very helpful and arranged for 3 pupils to come together in a special intensive class up to the June 2010 examinations, and all at reasonable cost!
The rate at which her Mandarin improved really astounded us. The tuition was friendly and first class. That said, the success was in part due to the determination of the student and as non-Mandarin speaking parents we tried to help as best we could. We helped in creating the flash cards for all the characters in the 3 text books. This latter exercise enabled our daughter to memorize the characters and meanings; it should not be under estimated as it is a powerful tool in mastering the language. Flash cards can be purchased commercially but we recognised the value for our daughter in creating the cards of her own. This has given her extra confidence in continuing with her Mandarin reading and igniting her interest in all things Chinese**.

Hua Hsia Chinese School partnered with Community Focus was successful in our funding from Paul Hamlyn Foundation Education and Learning Programme. We are now going to run a Dragon project with Community Focus. It is a Parent/Child based project and there are a limited number of 20 places. What we do: Parents and children together are going to write a script about the Dragon in both English & Chinese
Who can Attend: The parent and children (ages 7 and above ) will do this together with the director of True Heart Theatre Mr Wing Hong Li. It will be packed with fun. We are creating a chance for parents and children working together with a Chinese theme related to the Chinese culture. Through this, children and parents can enjoy something they both share. We also think it is a great chance for those families with non-Chinese background to experience the Chinese culture. Teachers are also welcome to book the place.
What is the outcome? It will be a short performance of 10-15 minute. We also hope it can be musical! The performance will be presented to our parents and students on the Dragon Boat Festival on the 27th June.
It is our open day and a lot of local mainstream schools are invited.

As a run up to the Chinese New Year, we had a successful and interesting True Heart Theatre performance on Sunday 31 January 2010. This was well attended and everyone really enjoyed themselves - a big thank you to True Heart Theatre which is funded by Trust for London and Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Remember Hua Hsia Chinese School will celebrate the Chinese New Year on 7th February 2010 with a performance from our students. This is at 3pm in the assembly hall and will be a 40 minute show. All students will receive a hong bao (red envelope) with a chocolate gold coin. Chinese sweets and tea will be on offer to the parents. I welcome parents and/or students to bring a celebratory plate of snacks to share with Hua Hsia Chinese School community. I do also hope that all the Hua Hsia Chinese School students will wear Chinese clothes on this special day celebrating Spring!
Dear Parents and Students, please note that the Museum of London: Docklands is celebrating the Year of the Tiger on 6, 13, 14, 21 February 2010. You can join them for a series of events throughout February to celebrate the Year of the Tiger and explore their galleries to discover how London's Chinese community developed in the East End and the historical importance of trade between London and China. There is FREE adult entry on 13, 14, 21 February and kids go free all year round! There are so many interesting things to do. We are currently working on the school calendar for 2010 - 2011 academic year. The school calendar generally follows that of the local schools of London Borough of Barnet, Camden and Westminster. A draft academic year 2010/11 will be announced shortly.
I have been contacted by MeiMei writing on the behalf of Music for Change. Music for Change is an Arts Council funded charitable art organisation. We are making an educational documentary 'Real Lives Shanghai' for UK schools to use. We are looking for two voice over artists aged 10 - 12, who speak English with an authentic Chinese accent (preferably haven't lived here for long). Residential and/or Daily Chinese Culture Summer Workshops 2009
This workshop gives you an opportunity to learn and experience: Traditional Chinese Arts & Crafts, Martial Arts (Chinese Kung Fu), Traditional Chinese Dance, Mandarin and other skills. There are going to be professional Chinese Teachers from R.O.C (Taiwan).
Places are limited, so sign up as soon as possible. Courses run from 16th - 21st August (6 days & 5 nights for residential.) The rate is £90 per week (excluding boarding). It costs £150 per week (Including boarding and three meals.) Students must be age 10+. The deadline will be the 30th of April. Please contact school office for application form.

Yellow Earth is planning in partnership with the Central School of Speech and Drama to launch the first British East Asian Youth Theatre for ages 8-18 in autumn 2009. This will be followed by A play in 2 days held at Central School of Speech and Drama, Swiss Cottage, London NW3. 6-7th April 2009.
Admission charge is £5.00 per students.
You need to pre-book the place with the school.
If there are less 10 students showing interest, I am afraid the taster workshop won't run and those who paid will get a refund. The closing date is 15th February.
